Prevent Bone Loss With Vibra Therapy

Did you know that your body replaces your entire skeleton about every 10 years? The bones in your body are under constant reconstruction, with old bone cells being replaced by new bone cells.

Unfortunately, as you get older the bone-building process slows down. If your body can’t make enough new bone cells to replace old bone cells, then you may be at risk of bone loss that weakens your bones and increases your risk of osteoporosis.

If you have concerns about bone health and strength, you may wonder what you can do. At Symonett Weight Loss Center in Colton, California, we may have a solution for you with our vibra therapy treatments.

Dr. Elmer Symonett, our medical director and weight-loss expert, uses vibra therapy to promote the body’s natural healing process and optimize health. The gentle vibrations from our noninvasive treatment offers many health benefits, including bone loss prevention.

Your body’s bone-building system

Though hard and rigid, your bones are made up of living cells that are regularly maintained and remodeled. The types of bone cells that make this process happen include:

Osteoblasts

Your osteoblasts are the cells responsible for making new bone cells and repairing old or broken bones. These cells make a protein — osteoid — that turns into bone.

Osteocytes

Osteocytes are inactive osteoblasts that help maintain bone cell connections.

Osteoclasts

The osteoclasts are the bone cells that break down and reabsorb old bone cells.

In order to have strong, healthy bones, you need a good balance of new and old bone cells. When reabsorption of old bone cells outpaces production of new bone cells, then you’re at risk of bone loss.

Some bone loss is normal as you get older. However, bone loss may weaken your bones, making them more susceptible to fractures.

Preventing bone loss

Good nutrition and regular exercise throughout your life is the best way to prevent bone loss that places you at risk of fractures and osteoporosis, according to the Mayo Clinic. However, it’s never too late to start.

To support your body’s natural bone-building powers, you need to eat a healthy diet that supplies an adequate amount of protein and plenty of calcium-rich foods like cow’s milk, yogurt, fortified plant milk or juices, and leafy greens.

Vitamin D is also essential for bone-building, but only naturally found in a few foods, including fortified milk, fatty fish (salmon and tuna), and egg yolks. Though your body makes vitamin D through sun exposure, you may find a combination of nutritional supplements and food the best way to meet your vitamin D needs.

If you’re not sure what you should be eating, we can help. We provide dietary counseling with nutrition professionals who design a healthy bone-building diet that suits your tastes and optimizes overall health.

Regular exercise strengthens not only your muscles, but also your bones by helping increase bone density. However, the best bone-building exercises are ones that stress the bone, like jogging, hiking, dancing, and strength training. Swimming and biking, on the other hand, are good for the cardiovascular system but are not good bone-building exercises.

How vibra therapy improves bone health

Vibra therapy is a painless, noninvasive treatment. During your session, we have you stand, sit, squat, or lie on a platform, which gently vibrates your whole body for a set period of time, usually about 10 minutes.

Like weight-bearing exercises, vibra therapy may prevent bone loss and improve bone health by stressing the bone to increase bone density. Additionally, the gentle vibrations improve blood circulation to your bones, which may play a role in preventing bone loss.

According to a March 2015 review article published in the scientific journal Menopause Review, whole-body vibration increases growth hormone and testosterone levels in your blood, which may prevent bone loss and osteoporosis.

Researchers also theorize that vibra therapy may prevent bone loss by turning the stem cells in your bone marrow into bone cells instead of fat cells.

Though we encourage vibra therapy for bone health, our vibration treatments also reduce stress, improve muscle strength, and alleviate joint aches and pains.

It’s never too late to improve bone health. Call our office or book an appointment online to schedule your vibra therapy sessions.
